Staying Fit in the Fall

So, it's that time of year again. You go from running around outside all day long, to sitting in a desk all day long, and then getting home when it's too dark to go outside! It's just not fair!

Well, it doesn't have to be that way. A little planning can be all it takes to make sure that you stay moving as the days get shorter and colder!

Join a club Even if you aren't in school athletics, you can still make plans to keep exercise in your schedule at least three times a week. There are tons of after school clubs out there, and even some that don't charge if you really look hard enough. They provide the facilities for indoor sports, whether it's track, hockey, swimming - whatever; and also adult supervision and trainers to help you improve!

Don't be afraid As long as you're not experiencing extreme weather conditions, you can probably still go outside for a walk or even a run. Dressing right is key to staying warm and protecting your health against chills, but even rain won't melt you as long as you dry off and warm up afterwards!

Focus on a Winter Sport Even if it isn't snowy out yet, you can still plan and train for a Winter Sport you might like to pursue! Skiers and snowboarders crosstrain with other exercises when there's no snow, so look in a magazine for your favorite winter sport, and find out what you're heroes are doing to prepare for the season ahead.

Since you don't need to win any gold medals, just do what you can, for at least half an hour, at least three times a week. That's the minimum. You'll have to do more and watch your diet if you need to lose weight. Just make sure you check with your parents and your family doctor before starting any new exercise and diet plans. They'll help you to help yourself!
