And they’re off!  The new race for “American Idol” has begun, with thousands of hopefuls lining up for a chance to audition in San Diego, California.  It was a two day process, with singers lining up on Sunday for the neon yellow wristbands that would get them in on Monday.  Lot’s of people slept in their cars, or even on trolly platforms waiting to get in line!  Hotel rooms were out of the question, as not only the largest comic convention in the world, ComiCon, was being held in San Diego this past weekend, but so was the annual Sand Castle Competition as well as an international youth soccer tournament!  If you want your chance, look for the auditions closest to your town: Dallas, TX; Omaha, Neb; Atlanta, GA; Charleston, SC; Miami, FL and Philadelphia, PA! 
 

Emmy Sings!

Emmy Rossum, star of Phantom of the Opera, releases her new album today. It’s called “Inside Out” and is available only on iTunes!  Unlike what we’ve seen her do before, these aren’t anyone else’s songs – she wrote them all herself!  At 20 years old, that’s a pretty incredible feat!  Single’s to look for (and hear on MySpace!) are “Slow Me Down”, “Stay” and “Lullaby”.  Go check it out! 

Don’t Drive Drunk – Really

In a new Public Service Announcement (PSA), Lane Garrison warns against drunk driving, saying” It’s just not worth it.”  Take it from a man who knows.  Garrison, formerly one of the stars of the TV show Prison Break, was drunk when he hit and killed a 17 year old.  The PSA shows a re-enactment of that night, and will stay with you, in a bad-for-a-good-reason way.

Not only have we heard rumors that Paris has been taken out of the Hilton will (that means heiress-no-more!), her TV show with Nicole Ritchie, The Simple Life, has been cancelled as well!  On another front, Lindsay Lohan’s new movie I Know Who Killed Me came out to no acclaim over the weekend, taking 9th place in the box office race.  And Britney is officially divorced. To sort of quote Bridget Jones.  We’re still trying to ignore her until she does something good, so you’ll have to go elsewhere for that new for now…

will.i.am Goes Solo

The leader of the Black Eyed Peas is hard at work, and nervous, about is solo debut “Songs About Girls”.  Strange.  We’re just excited!  (Atwater Rocks!)  It’s a 12 song album that traces a path through the phases of love and relationships, so no matter where you are, you’ll find an anthem for your own personal “right now”!  There will also be some really cool extras, like a way to profit share, just by sharing a new digital player.  Definitely more on that later!  For now, just ‘get it started in here’ on Sept. 25th!

It seems Warner Brothers will not be outdone and has opened a new boutique in Hollywood!  Lot’s of starlets were out to help, like Molly Sims, Emmy Rossum and Haylie Duff, and each with at least a splash of yellow to give props to the bird.  Lot’s of kitties, no puddy tats – all in all, a very good day for birds!

Anne Becomes Jane

Yesterday was the premiere of Anne Hathaway's next movie, "Becoming Jane" in New York City, and she and her costars were out and shining. The movie is about the young life and love of Jane Austen, who wrote some of the most romantic stories you know and love, like "Pride and Prejudice"!  This is a swooner, ladies!  And opening for the rest of us on August 3rd!

Lindsay get the Paris Treatment

In keeping with the prisoner of the moment, Madame Tussauds, the famous wax museum, has added a new figure of Lindsay Lohan to their collection, and in prison stripes, just like they did with Paris Hilton!  We think they were just planning ahead for her upcoming court appearance for a DUI, but their timing couldn't be more perfect!  Linds was picked up 2 nights ago for ANOTHER DUI!!!  Her voluntary ankle bracelet had been removed  at some point during the afternoon before heading out clubbing later on that evening.  Police picked her up in the Civic Center parking lot in Santa Monica for chasing another car under the influence. The driver of the car she was pursuing was the mother of her former personal assistant. Lindsay assistant quit earlier that same evening.

Kelly Clarkson is Sorry

Hopefully, this will make Clive Davis a little nicer to her in future:  On her own blog, Kelly has apologized about all the stories that have been circulating about her misunderstanding with Clive over her newest album "My December".  The album debuted at number two, so we're pretty sure she's still happy about her decision to write all the songs herself...and that makes this apology an even nicer gesture.  She's not forgetting who did her all those favors before she made it on her own!

Did you forget to wish Daniel Radcliffe a Happy Birthday?!? He's now 18, and all grown up and ready to be sensible about spending all that money he spent his whole childhood earning.  In fact, turning 18 has enabled him to gain access to quite a fortune, $41.1 million to be exact.

"I don't plan to be one of those people who, as soon as they turn 18, suddenly buy themselves a massive sports car collection or something similar," he told an Australian interviewer earlier this month. "I don't think I'll be particularly extravagant. 

Sensible?Daniel doesn't want to be known as "The Boy Who Lived It Up"!  Let's see if he fares better than the other stars of his generation - Good Luck and Happy Birthday!

Is Ashlee getting Cured?

Robert Smith, iconic headman for the group The Cure, went to see Ashlee Simpson perform, and set loose a storm of rumors!  It was then reported that the two would be collaborating on a song for her next album, which surprised both stars!  When asked to deny the rumor, Smith decided against, stating that though it would surprise him to find himself working with Simpson, he had no intention of ruling it out!  That's because he thinks she's really good!  Now that's a kewl review!

A New Hero!

As characters come and go from the series "Heroes", we now have definite word of one new one: Dana Davis is joining the cast. Most recently in the cast of the cancelled summer teen drama "Hidden Palms", she will play Monica, a new hero with as yet unrevealed powers.  The show premieres September 24th, so start checking the days off on your calendar!

KEWL's Hairspray Review

You "can't stop the beat" and you can't help but love Nikki Blonsky who is infectiously spot on as Tracy Turnblad, the girl who believes she can change the world as easily as her hair color. Not to mention she's got great taste in guys since she falls hairsprayed head over dancing heels in love with Link Larkin, played by none other than hunky Zac Efron.  By the end of "Ladies Choice" Zac might not be breathless but you most likely will be! By the way, do us a favor and SCREAM when you see Zac for the first time on screen. Afterall this IS his big screen debut! 

There are so many wonderful moments throughout this film but the opening sequence remains, even by the end of the film, one of the most memorable, as Tracy greets the new day with "Good Morning Baltimore."

If you're not smiling, tapping your toes,  and singing along by the end of the movie, your friends just might nickname you Amber so look out!

Nanny Jumps Release Again!

But this time, it’s moving up!  Scarlett Johansson’s next movie, The Nanny Diaries, based on the best-selling book, was first scheduled to open in April, was then pushed back to the fall, and now it’s moving back towards us for an August 24th opening!  Usually, a movie gets moved back because it’s not playing as well as the studio would like, but moving it back up?!?  We’ve never heard of that before!  Let’s hope it means good things for the movie…and Scarlett!

On “All Hallows Eve”…or really, the eve of the release of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”, there are parties at bookstores around the nation (and the world) getting ready for the first sales of the book at midnight TONIGHT!  So get in line early, or get your wristband (got ours!), or just show up at a bookstore and get in on the fun!  Music, games, food, and at midnight, we finally get to know what happens…and who dies!  Yikes!  Holding our fingers…

Lopez and Anthony: Together Even More!

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony are considering going on tour together!  The super powered latin couple have been collaborating on movies, music, and in their lives, but only now are they considering a tour.  We suspect this is Marc’s influence as, believe it or not, Jennifer has never toured!!!  The duo has a movie coming out soon called El Cantante, about the legendary salsa singer Hector Lavoe, who was known widely as “The Singer of Singers”.  We can’t wait to hear Marc lay his romantic vocals into that one!  The soundtrack comes out July 24th!

The Plain White T’s have taken over Rihanna on the number one spot with their single “Hey There Delilah”!  Not only is it the T’s first number one, but also the first number one in the Hot 100 for their label, Hollywood Records!  Meanwhile, the biggest digital rising single is from Aly & AJ with their “Potential BreakUp Song”!  We think that’s super KEWL, cuz we were at Aly & AJ’s birthday bash when The Plain White T’s dedicated “Delilah” to them!!!!  Coincidence?  Or just good Karma?  You can check it all out yourself in our new summer issue out now!  Congratulations all around!

The Emmys are Nominated!

Super early this morning, Kyra Sedgwick and Jon Cryer were up and helping out to announce this year’s Emmy Award Nominees!  Not surprisingly, The Sopranos are up for most of the top spots, but new shows did well also:   Ugly Betty came in a 11 nominations, while Heroes brought home 8!  Jon Cryer was allowed a little gloat-time, as he mini-celebrated the nomination of his own series, Two and a Half Men.  And Hannah Montana got a nomination, too – go Miley!  Check out the full list at  www.emmys.com!

The super trendy “I’m Not a Plastic Bag” tote that has been seen carried by lots of stars over the last couple of months, created some hysteria among New York shoppers today.  An extremely limited amount of the shopping bags – intended to replace paper or plastic ones – were available in select stores this morning, creating lines of 300 to 500 people!  The canvas bags sold for $15, but can already be found on eBay going for $120 -$200!  We’d feel better about it, if some of that money were going to a charity, but…We’ll probably be in line when they’re available in our neighborhood, too!

On Queen Latifah’s new album “Trav’lin Light” due out this September 25th, she’s asked a few other “lights” in the R&B heaven’s to collaborate.  The album will feature guests such as Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, and jazz singer Jill Scott, to help her keep things in the jazzie mood of the material, which is rumored to be pulled from the great American songbook associated with great women singers such as Etta James, Sarah Vaughn and Nina Simone.  See a few names you don’t recognize in there?!?  Check them out!

A New Oz?

Looks like the Sci-Fi network is going to make us happy again!  They’ve decided to do an updated The Wizard of Oz as a six hour mini-series starring Zooey Deschanel as Dorothy and Alan Cumming as The Scarecrow.  The show will be called Tin Man, and already has us hooked!  Regular girl DG finds herself in “The Outer Zone” (O.Z.), and meets a man with half a brain, a monster-like creature with no backbone, and the “Tin Man” on her way to meet the Mystic Man.  Could be scary, but we’ll keep you informed on that score!  

Potter Plot Spoilers!

Although Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is not due out until Saturday, July 21st, word is that sites all over the net are leaking the ending! According to the Leaky Cauldron, an official fan based site for all things Potter, fans (both Muggles and Magical alike) are trying to stop the leaks. 

JK Rowling herself is trying to get true Potter fans to wait before reading any advanced copies of the book until the official release of the book. Here is a peak into JK's diary...

Teens Texting While Driving, Die

In upstate New York, a group of five recently graduated cheerleaders were killed when their SUV plowed head on into an oncoming tractor trailer.  No one will ever know if the driver was actually doing the texting, but messages were sent and received as few as 38 seconds before the first call to 911!  In Massachusetts, a five car pile up that was blamed on a text messaging driver, led to legislation against any texting during driving.  Those of us who drive have all had those moments where we've made a phone call and looked down at our phones too long or have even tried to look for a pen to write down something while driving. We always think we will be just fine but all it takes is that one time... Should there be more laws, or should drivers use more common sense?  Check out blog.kewlmag.com and give us your opinion.

There are over 200 bands in the US alone that wrock…or play wizard rock – music about, and from the perspective of none other than Harry Potter as depicted in Rowling’s books!  One gig playing in Harvard Yard this Friday night on the eve of the 7th book’s release (renamed Hogwarts Square for the night), features headliners Harry and the Potters, Draco and the Malfoy’s, and The Hungarian Horntails.  Their songs feature the stuff that makes up the world of HP, with love songs to Ginny Weasley, and He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named knows what else!  Check out these bands’ myspace pages to get wrocking!

Friday the 13th

Did you know that Friday the 13th is only bad luck in English, German, Polish and Portuguese speaking cultures? However in Greece or Spain Tuesday the 13th is their bad luck day.

 Although no real evidence exists as to the reason for the superstition, some people trace it back to the famous Last Supper of Jesus Christ where Judas betrayed  Jesus when kissing him on the cheek. In attendance? 12 Apostles plus Jesus making unlucky 13!

So what are some of the superstitions  of today? What should you avoid? Nothing if you're not superstitious! But if you enjoy telling ghost stories around the campfire or at slumber parties, then you might enjoy the fun of avoiding the following things today:

1) do not walk under any ladders

2) do not let a black cat cross your path

3) don't break any mirrors or you will have 7 years of bad luckk

4) don't open that umbrella in the house

5) don't leave the fire burning before going to sleep

6) don't do anything important today

While we think these are silly superstitions and don't think they hold water, it's something that a lot of people do take seriously. So have fun today and if you really want to enjoy the spirit of the day, watch a scary movie tonight! 

First Harry Potter Store

The first Harry Potter Store in the US opened today at FAO Schwarz and Harry Potter star Rupert Grint was there for all the action. Rupert checked out the miniature doll of him as well as Harry Potter shirts, Scene It games and of course, Harry Potter wands to cast your magic spells!

Harry Potter Rakes It In!

As of this morning, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix has made over 44 million dollars!  As a matter of fact, the very first show at midnight on Tuesday brought in 12 million alone!  That’s a whole lotta money!  The previous summer hit, Transformers, took two weeks to make that much!  We refuse to be spoilers, so get out there and see it yourself! 

McPhee keeps booking!

In the second film role she’s booked this year, Katherine McPhee will be playing a pregnant hippie sorority sister opposite Anna Faris, as the disgraced Playboy bunny (?) who is now the house mother to the lamest sorority on campus.  Full of quirky characters, like Rumer Willis as a girl in a back-brace who hasn’t needed to wear it in years, the script is by the same writers who gave us “Legally Blonde”, which is a very hopeful sign!  There’s no title as of yet, so we’ll keep you posted as more info comes in!

For the premiere of “The Simpsons” on Fox this fall, the album “The Simpsons: Testify” is being released on Sept. 18th.  The album will include more than three dozen original tracks recorded especially for the past nine seasons of the show, including music celebrities as well as songs by the cast of the show!  But don’t worry!  You won’t have to wait for all of your “Simpsons” themed music shopping – there are also a bunch of music releases set to go with the movie premiere on July 27th!  What?  Get your own DOH-nuts!

The 80’s Rise Again!

There’s a new musical hitting the boards in London on Oct. 12th, based on the 80’s cult film “Desperately Seeking Susan” and featuring songs from 80’s icon band Blondie!  The original film was almost entirely made up of Madonna’s songs, so though the period is right, will the music fit?  The movie was Madonna’s first film role, and ushered in a world-wide wave of fashion, most of which is back in style now, based on her New York City-dancer style.  Let’s hope the musical makes it to the states, so we can check it out for ourselves!  

Hairspray Premiere

Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale were on hand last night at the premiere of Hairspray in Westwood to support their main man Zac Efron. 

This group is just having the best two-year-long-summer-camp session ever!  Making their movies and going on tour together has only made them closer!  How much fun would it be to play with these guys!  The countdown is on!  August 17th, and we can finally see High School Musical 2!

Anne Hathaway Gets Smart!

It’s here!  The first trailers for the upcoming movie “Get Smart” starring Steve Carrell, Anne Hathaway, and The Rock, are up on YouTube!  This one should be really funny, and out stupid the “Pink Panther” any day!  If you’re not up on your Nick at Night, this is ALSO a re-make, but this time, of a 1960’s TV show making fun of all things “spy”.

Springfield in Vermont!

Of all the Springfields in our great  nation, the one that will be hosting the premiere of “The Simpsons Movie”, will be Springfield, Vermont!  The town got the most votes based on the film they submitted about “why they are the real Springfield”, featuring a Homer-like character chasing a giant pick donut past town landmarks.  Sounds funny!  Congratulations, Springfield!  Your big night is July 21st!

While Keith Urban was performing Saturday with Alicia Keys on the Live Earth stage, his sleeve slipped up, showing off a big scripted tattoo of “Nicole” on his upper arm!  We don’t doubt that the tat is a sign of his commitment to his wife, Nicole Kidman, but haven’t celebrities learned anything about tattoos?!?  Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie, and many other beautiful people have inked the names of their loved ones on their bodies, only to have the relationship fail – and then come the embarrassing photos of trying to hide or remove the “artwork”!  Sheesh!  Sure it’s romantic, but…?!?
 

The Harry Potter Kids In Cement!

Yesterday at Mann’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood, the three stars of the Harry Potter movies had the ultimate honor of putting their hands and feet into the cement of the historic theater’s forecourt!  As part of the premiere festivities yesterday on Hollywood Boulevard, the kids went through the slightly humiliating process of getting all “down and dirty” in front of all their fans.

Avril's "Girlfriend" Faces Lawsuit

Allegedly, Avril Lavigne's song "Girlfriend" sounds a bit too much like a song from the 80's called "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" by the band the Rubinoos, so they've decided to take her to court! The court date is set for Aug 28th.  In all fairness, Avril did co-write the song wih Luke Gottwald so she alone is not responsible for the similiarities. Here is what Avril has posted on her website about the accusation:

“To my dear media, friends, and fans,

You may have heard some news that two guys who wrote for some band from the 1970s I have never in my life heard of called the “Rubinoos” are trying to sue me. They have a song called “I Want To Be Your Boyfriend” that has no musical similarities to the song “Girlfriend” that Luke Gottwald and I wrote together. They claim that a small part of the lyrics are the same and are saying that I took these from them. I had never heard this song in my life and their claim is based on 5 words! All songs share similar lyrics and emotions. As humans we speak one language.

Off the top of my head, two other songs that I can immediately think of with this type of lyric are “Hey, hey, you, you get off of my cloud” by the Rolling Stones and “Hey little girl I want to be your boyfriend” by the Ramones. Simply put, I have been falsely accused of ripping their song off. Luke and I have done nothing wrong and there is no merit to their claim.”

Prince's Marathon Concert

Prince, the aritst formerly known as a symbol who was formerly known as Prince,  played over  54 songs in 245 minutes yesterday  at Macy's in Minneapolis according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. That's a really long time! Prince took the stage in front of 400 people but we're wondering how many of them lasted throughout the entire concert! Later than same evening, he took the stage at 2:45 AM and police had to boot him off the stage after an hour or so as they have a curfew that states no loud music after 3am.

Rio Live Earth Back On!

The same judge who pulled the plug on the Rio de Janeiro Live Earth concert yesterday, has revoked her own injunction, and the concert will go on after all!  The promoters have secured assurances from the already strapped police force of the city that there will be adequate security for the free concert on Copa Cabana Beach, at which are expected around 1 million concert goers.  Secure that!  Well…we guess, if you’re going to a concert in Rio, you know what you’re getting into!  Take no valuables, and samba like there’s no tomorrow!

The Rainbow Carpet!

Continuing the new tradition of having an anything-but-red carpet at premieres, the cast of Hairspray stepped out onto a rainbow carpet in London last night!  Fitting for the movie who’s theme is how everyone fits in!  Zac, Amanda, Nikki and Elijah were looking quite spiffy in there night-time attire, and Zac was wearing two rings!!!  Who could the other one be for?!?

For us, at least!  Seems Kate Middleton has responded to Prince William’s pleas to come back, and continue to put up with the royal pain that is the British paparazzi!  It’s gotta be hard, getting photographed every morning on your way to work!  But we’re sure there’s an upside: Those seats in the royal box can’t be too bad, and Will isn’t all that hard to look at!  At all!

So, maybe it’s not an exact quote, but it fits this kewl new movie waaaay better!  We just saw the preview for Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, and we think you should, too!  It’s just so kewl!  The movie stars Natalie Portman, Dustin Hoffman and Jason Bateman, and dares you to believe in just everything!  Just say Yes to magic!  They’re releasing it at Thanksgiving (the old Harry Potter release date), and we’re hoping to be very Thankful indeed!

Jason Dolley of Cory in the House turns Sweet 16  today!

Born in Los Angeles, this  native Californian landed his first major role at the age of 12 for a role in the show Complete Savages. Mel Gibson picked him personally who at the time was going to direct.

In 2006 he starred in the direct to video release of Saving Shiloh, a Disney Channel original moive and later that same year landed the role of Newton "Newt" Livingston in Disney Channel's Cory in the House.

Sparks and Clarkson?

With the cancellation of her summer tour, rumors of Kelly Clarkson joining up with the Idols Live tour have even reached the Idols rehearsal room!  New Idol Jordin Sparks says she’s excited about the idea, even though nothing has been confirmed yet, saying “That would be really cool for me.”  With lots of duets and group songs planned for the new tour, the emphasis on rehearsing has been greater than in the years before.  Jordin has even admitted that she’s been in the studio on her own, and recorded at least one song for her debut album already!  Writing on her own isn’t high on her priority list yet, but she admits to writing a little poetry in her spare time, and doesn’t rule it out for the future.  Spare time!  Between rehearsing, touring and recording – what exactly does she mean by ‘spare time’?!?

Do you know who Sean “the Pen” Garrett is?  We’ll he knows you pretty well!  He’s the guy who wrote Enrique Iglesias’ hit “Do You Know?”, Chris Brown’s “Wall to Wall”, and an as yet unnamed song with Britney Spears!  That’s right!  He says it’s already recorded and ready to go, and exactly what we’ve all been waiting for from Britney!  Even though Sean won this year’s BMI songwriter of the year award (together with Kara DioGuardi), he claims he’s still learning – isn’t that cool?  We cant’ wait to hear what he writes once he’s learned a little more!

Yesterday, at the Concert for Diana in London, the Princes were seen waving their hands in the air like they just didn’t care, and shaking their groove thangs in time to the beat!  It seemed like the boys were really celebrating the joy of life their mother had taught them, as well as giving tribute to her legacy as a woman out to make a difference in the world.  Happy Birthday, Diana!
