Jo Bros Gather #1s!

kewl_mag_joe_nick_400June 30, 2008

Not that they weren’t always #1 in your hearts, but now there are national chart numbers to back it up! iTunes #1 Video (Burnin’ Up), #1 podcast and #1 song (Burnin’ Up). They even have the #2 album with the soundtrack to Camp Rock! Right now, the guys are in Canada getting ready for their 4th of July concert there.  When will they be coming back to the states?!? There is now also talk of a book deal coming for the fall – what a way to celebrate getting back to school!

WALL*E Wins Box Office

kewl_mag_wall_e_400June 30, 2008

The computer-animated family-oriented film from Pixar about a lonely trash-compacting robot that doesn’t speak, trounced the competition in this weekend’s box office race. The esoteric spy story Wanted starring Anglina Jolie came in second – but hey! There are more people in a family than in a couple! By all accounts, WALL*E is a film that all ages are eating up, with or without a need for kid friendly fare.  Sometimes a good story simply is a good story!

Miley All Grown Up?

kewl_mag_miley4_400June 27, 2008

At least that is what Miley told Billboard about the tone of her new album! Though still 15, the young artist has been through a lot in the past year, and as a songwriter, she has tried to share some of that with her fans. All but two of the songs on her upcoming album “Breakout” were written by Miley herself, and she adds that, “No matter how long what I'm doing here lasts, I want to be a songwriter for the rest of my life."  The teen star is back at work on the third season of Hannah Montana right now, as well as doing work on a new feature film at home in Tennessee. The album streets on July 22nd, so start counting down!

FNMTV?

kewl_mag_pet_ashlee2_400June 27, 2008

We’re not even going to ask what it stands for, but this new show on MTV hosted by the 'even though he’s married' cute Pete Wentz, is his attempt to bring back what MTV used to be about in the olden days: namely a place for hot new videos to premiere! His guests in the Hollywood studio for the show this week were Rihanna and Maroon 5, performing her duet with frontman Adam Levine and the rest of the band.  Even Ashlee was on hand to give out hugs, so the love fest of the beautiful people was in full swing! The show airs Fridays @ 8pm…will “If I Never See Your Face Again” be featured this week?

Katy is the 1,000th #1!

kewl_mag_katy_perry_400June 26, 2008

Kewl chick Katy Perry just passed longtime hitmakers Coldplay to grab the number one spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 with her single “I Kissed a Girl”. And by lucky chance, that makes her the 1,000th artist to have a number one hit in the rock era (or kinda since we started counting!). The first ever #1 rock hit was Bill Haley’s “Rock Around the Clock”, and if you’ve never heard it, you should make the effort to find it – it still rocks! Same goes for Katy’s kooky song…wonder if we’ll be listening to this song 53 years in the future as well?!?

Jonas Up the River!

kewl_mag_jonas_2_400

June 26, 2008

Yesterday, our fave brother boy band performed on a floating stage on the river Spree that flows through Berlin, Germany! It was all for the summer music series for Germany’s VIVA TV, and the guys seemed to be having a great time! The soundtrack to Camp Rock debuted at # 3 last week, and Joe and Demi Lovato’s duet "This Is Me" was the top charting single from the set at #11. Today at 3pm, TRL First Look will focus on their newest single “Burnin’ Up” (though if you’ve been keeping up here, you’ve already seen that video!). It looks like the guys will be taking a mini-vacay from performing, with their next concert planned for Toronto on July 4th…July 4th?!? Who planned that? Don’t you think the guys want to spend that day in the US? After all, it’s not a holiday anywhere else!

Kanye Wins at BETs

kewl_mag_kanye_west_400June 25, 2008

Last night Black Entertainment Television had its annual awards show at the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium, and the royalty of black music was on hand! Big winners of the night were Kanye West and UGK with two awards each. Kanye even brought up million selling debut artist Lil Wayne, who he introduced as “my fiercest competition”, and went on to laugh at the idea that hip-hop is dead. Awards were also given to Alicia Keys, Chris Brown, The Dream and Missy Elliot, and the evening featured performances by Usher, Alicia Keys, SWV, En Vogue, TLC, Lil Wayne, Ne-Yo, Rihanna, T Pain, Keyshia Cole, Chris Brown, Nelly, gospel artist Marvin Sapp, Jill Scott, Maxwell (for the first time on stage in five years!) and lifetime achievement honoree Al Green, who is a living, singing legend. What a night!

Zac Does Too Shower!

kewl_mag_zac_vanessa_400

June 25, 2008

Vanessa Hudgens corrected the record in a recent interview with Cosmogirl, denying the internet rumor that boyfriend Zac Efron would not shower, sometimes for days at a time! The rumor was supposedly started by someone on the set of HSM3, who said the hottie loved his basketball and dancing, but wouldn’t shower, and was getting kind of ‘funky’. Vanessa says that this simply isn’t true! He showers, everyday, just like every other normal person! Other than that, she wouldn’t talk about their relationship much. But about relationships in general, she did have this to say, “If you really love someone, you shouldn’t have to work at it. You finish each others’ sentences and have the same sense of humor… You have to think it through, not just do something spur of the moment. I think girls can be infatuated with their boyfriends and they have to remember [to put themselves] first.” Our own Cassie couldn’t have put it better! Vanessa's new album "Identified" drops next week, so be sure to check it out!

Varsity Fanclub!

kewl_mag_varsity_fanclub

June 24, 2008

Today is the release of the latest new boy band’s first single release! Varsity Fanclub, who KEWL spent a day with just hanging at the guys pad, is made up of five talented guys: Drew Scott, Jayk Purdy, Thomas Fiss, Bobby Edner and David Brandt.  They were practicing their choreography and songs in the studio, and just being guys. Pretty regular stuff for a group of guys that’s about to hit it big. Their newest digital single, “Future Love”, is available as of today, though you probably have already heard it on AOL Music’s Kids Pop Channel, where it got a solid thumbs up in the Music Mailbag pick-it-or-kick-it poll.  Their next single “Zero” will be available on July 22nd, but that’s a day after the guys make their TV debut on ABC Family Channel’s The Middleman playing themselves and singing their single “Bad Habit”. By then, it’ll be like you know them personally!  Look for their album in early 2009.

Camp Rock Sequel?

kewl_mag_camp_rockJune 24, 2008

After 16.2 million people tuned in to watch the combined airings of Camp Rock this weekend, Disney wasted no time in beginning to organize a sequel to the Jonas Brothers weekend extravaganza.  Reports are that all of the main cast are set to return, and there are plans to film starting next spring or summer. Of course, that all depends on everyone’s schedules! This summer, the Jonas Brothers and Demi are out on tour and then returning to film their upcoming TV show, J.O.N.A.S. With so many talented kids, it could be tough to get them all in one place again…especially a camp in Canada with no internet access!!!

WALL*E Premiere!

June 22, 2008

kewl_mag_wall_e_01KEWL attended the world premiere of Wall E this weekend and caught up with some of your favorite celebs!

The event took place at the Greek Theatre, an outdoor ampitheatre where Wall E came to life on a  REALLY big screen!

There was David Archuleta who talked about his upcoming albumkewl_mag_david_archuleta_400.

And Scott Michael Foster from Greek was there, along with Selena Gomez, Jason Dolley, David Henrie, Jake T. Austin, Madison Pettis, Jansen Panettiere, Camp Rock's Anna Maria Perez de Tagle and Buzz Aldrin, the 2nd man to have ever landed on the moon's surface.

Along the red carpet, which was actually more like a Mars Surface Red Carpet, representatives of NASA were on hand to answer questions about their numerous gizmos that were displayed there. Some of them were exact replicas of the kind that were recently on Mars, like the one that just discovered ice under its surface!

Wall E will undoubtedly become one of your favorite films of all time. You will fall in love with Wall E and will most likely be looking to get your own robotic version of Wall E!

Second Dunk in History!

kewl_mag_candace_parker_400June 23, 2008

Last night, Candace Parker of the LA Sparks became the second woman ever in the WNBA to ‘dunk’.  Her team went on to beat the Indiana Fever by 14 points as well.  The only other woman in the WNBA to do this was her teammate, Lisa Leslie.  The emerging aggressive style of these ladies’ play is, according to Parker, a sign of things to come. “There’s going to be more to come in the league itself.” She also added, “I’m happy that I was able to do it in Los Angeles in front of the home fans.” Let’s hear it for the girls!

Let Your Jonas Begin!

kewl_mag_jonas_400

June 20, 2008

And just because this is the day of all things Jonas, you have to check out the premiere of the new Jonas Brother’s video “Burning Up”! It’s so much fun to watch, we almost forgot to listen to the song! Nick is a double-0 agent, Joe gets his Miami Vice on with the guy’s bodyguard Big Rob, and Kevin gets Kung-fu with the master. Too awesome!  Oh! And the song’s pretty kewl too! Now you have something to do until 8 o’clock tonight!

Is That Your Hat?

kewl_mag_royal_ascot_400June 19, 2008

Yesterday, the Royal Ascot took place in England as it does every year, and even though it's officially a horse race, everyone knows that it's really about the hats! Each year, women dress up and wear the largest, most colorful, and craziest hats you've ever seen...or never seen before! It's a wonder anyone actually watches the horses with all the fun outfits and hats! It's time for us to have an event this fun in the US, too - don't  you think?!?

Miley Hosts Teen Choice

kewl_mag_miley_400June 18, 2008

The show won’t be airing until August 4th, but Fox is already lining up the talent for the 2008 Teen Choice Awards! Miley will host, which could get tricky as the teen mega star is up for four awards herself – “Here you go, Miley!” “Why Thank You, Miley!” Hottie Chris Brown is leading the pack with 9 nominations, and Justin Timberlake (the winningest Teen Choice ever with a total of 21 ‘Surfboards’ at home already!) has three noms this year. If you want to get in on the fun, go to TeenChoiceAwards.com and get your votes in!

Angelina Supports Refugees

kewl_mag_angelina_400June 18, 2008

In honor of World Refugee Day this Friday June 20th, Angelina Jolie, the UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, has filmed a Public Service Announcement reminding us to think of those who have survived, and those who have not. A refugee is anyone forced by war, natural disasters or political differences to leave their homes, usually on foot and with very few possessions.  The UNHCR (United Nations High Commission for Refugees) support, help and protection for these people wherever they are all over the world. If you want to get involved, go to www.unhrc.org.

Musical Make-Over

kewl_mag_linmanuel_miranda_400June 17, 2008

Sunday night, New York’s Broadway celebrated the best of the theatre world in the 2008 Tony Awards. Any play that appears on Broadway is eligible to win, and the most famous winners of all are the musicals. This year’s winningest musical was the latino/hip-hop inspired “In the Heights” all about life in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan Island. This is where, traditionally, immigrants from Caribbean and Latin nations move when they first come to New York, and the streets are alive with the sounds of Spanish and Latin music. Written by and starring Lin-Manuel Miranda (pictured) the play took four awards home, so instead of being an interesting experiment in bringing current culture into musicals, it’s shown how the new American cultures can bring new life into the theatre!  Now, before you go listening to the soundtrack at top levels, make sure to get your parents permission! It’s about life on the streets, and that can include some words or topics that might not be right for you! But it is some great music and dancing, and we suspect there will be a movie version by next Christmas. Just wait and see!

Kit or Camp?

kewl_mag_abigail_breslin_400_01June 17, 2008

You have a difficult choice before you, KEWL readers! Two movies that are ‘must see’ are premiering this weekend: In theatres, you have “Kit Kittredge: An American Girl” starring Abigail Breslin, Max Thieriot, Willow Smith, Madison Davenport and Zach Mills. And in the other corner, premiering on TV, is “Camp Rock” the Disney musical swoonfest starring the Jonas Brothers and the luckiest girls on earth in the form of Demi Lovato, Anna Maria Perez de Tagle, Alyson Stoner, Meaghan Jette Martin and Jasmine Richards. What will you do?

Rihanna Takes Two Bows

kewl_mag_rihanna_400June 16, 2008

At yesterday’s MuchMusic Awards in Toronto, Canada, Rihanna walked away with two statuettes for Best International Video (Don’t Stop the Music) and Most Watched Video (Umbrella).  She sported two wildly fashion forward outfits as well: A long black dress with white straps for the red carpet, and a high boots/funky tight pants/super ruffled shirt/military cap ensemble for her first ever TV performance of her new song “Take A Bow”. Girlfriend always looks as fierce as she sings! Congratulations on the awards, Ri-Ri!

Drake and Josh are Back!

kewl_mag_drake_josh_400

June 13, 2008

Our good friends at Nickelodeon are doing it again! They’ve asked Drake Bell and Josh Peck to come back in to the studio and shoot a full length movie as their famous TV characters! The movie will begin shooting next month under the title Drake & Josh: Best Christmas Ever. Hmm. Wonder when it will be hitting TV screens near you?!? Both Drake and Josh have been off working on their own acting careers, appearing in quite a few independent and comedic films – though not quite for the same audiences as before. Both guys are over 21 now, so we can’t expect them to play kids forever! No, not even if we beg. We’ll take this Christmas gift and be happy!

iMarathon!

kewl_mag_icarly_400_01

June 13, 2008

Don’t miss it guys! Tonight’s iCarly marathon followed by the iCarly Special “iCarly Saves TV”. When your heroes’ show goes network, the executives just can’t leave a good thing alone, and start changing things left and right! They even go so far as to replace Sam (Jennette McCurdy) with and snooty new tween diva Amber Tate (Desperate Housewives’ Rachel Fox), and send Freddie (Nathan Kress) to get coffee! How will Carly get her show back?  Hey, wait! If Miranda Cosgrove is also in the new Drake and Josh movie, this has been an all-Miranda News Day! Let’s hope she thinks Friday the 13th is her lucky day, because it certainly seems that way to us! Marathon starts @ 2pm – Special at 8pm, both on Nickelodeon!  Be there!

Carrie Carries On!

kewl_mag_carrie_underwood_400June 12, 2008

While other acts are cancelling their tours before they even start, this southern songbird is one singer America can’t get enough of!  Her “Carnival Ride” Tour has been so popular, that she’s decided to extend it for another round beginning in September and going all the way on through December.  The current tour schedule will be ending on June 24th in New Orleans, and she’ll pick it up again for fans beginning September 23rd in Cleveland, and finish it up December 14th in Gainesville, Florida.  And don’t worry! Carrie won’t be rusty when she hits the road again – she’ll be playing festivals and fairs all summer all over America.  To find our where and when, just check out all her performance dates at www.carrieunderwood.fm/tour.

Camp Rock Premiere!

kewl_mag_jonas_bros_400

June 12, 2008

Last night the guys and girls of Camp Rock were slightly more ‘citified’ at the premiere of the movie at New York’s Ziegfeld Theatre.  Nick, Joe and Kevin were there to greet sign-bearing, screaming, and even some crying fans, as well as the girls who got to have the best camp experience ever! The girls were all looking great! Demi Lovato looked beautiful, as did her co-stars Anna Maria Perez de Tagle rocking her fave red bowed heels and matching red dress, Jasmine Richards in all black with black Ugg boots, Meaghan Jette Martin in more pink and glitter than you can shake a stick at and Alyson Stoner keeping it real in a gorgeous blue top and skinny jeans to show off those dancer’s legs!  They all looked gorgeous!  Maybe that’s because they are?  That signals that the “I Can’t Wait” countdown is on! Only 8 more days until Camp Rock!!!

Gossip About the Girl

kewl_mag_taylor_momsen_400June 11, 2008

The rumor is, that the super popular and drama heavy show Gossip Girl may be getting a spin-off series.  The funny part is, they haven’t even decided which character will be the focus of the new series yet!  Based on the popular book series, the obvious choice would be Taylor Momsen’s character Jenny Humphrey, who in a Miley like moment, is pictured in a teen mag wearing not quite enough clothing, and has to leave school to avoid the scandal.  The creators have said that the show will be set in a upscale boarding school.  Though Momsen would be a perfect choice, there is talk that a new character may be introduced in the fall, and the spin-off would be based around that character.  Scan your books, girls!  Who do you think it will be?!?

iFriday the 13th

kewl_mag_icarly_400

June 10, 2008

As a special treat to combat the idea that Friday the 13th is somehow bad luck, fans will have the good luck to not only watch a four hour iCarly marathon that day, but it will be followed by a world premiere iCarly special! “ iCarly Save TV” will feature your favorite cast up against the executives at Clueless TV, showing them a thing or two about what their teen audience really wants.  Since the iCarly album is coming out today, you can already start to get in the mood, grooving to the tunes that accompany the show, as well as four new songs recorded by Miranda Cosgrove.  Along with regular castmates Jennette McCurdy and Nathan Kress, the special on Friday will also feature Rachel Fox of Desperate Housewives and Leon Thomas from August Rush.  To go to the site created just for this special, go to http://www.nick.com/icarlysavestv/ for some really kewl extras!  But get your parents permission first!

Video Guru

kewl_mag_love_guru_400June 10, 2008

Mike Myers and Jessica Alba of “The Love Guru” put out a funny Bollywood take-off video for their new film.  Mike ‘plays’ the sitar and sings a cover of The Steve Miller Band’s 1970’s hit “The Joker”, while Jess dances and high pitched sings (we’re almost sure she has a voice double here!) her way into his heart.  No one can pull it off exactly like the real Bollywood, but this video is fun!  The movie opens June 20th, so you’ll all be seeing it after that, as that’s the same night that Camp Rock premieres!  Poor movie!  No teens will be in the theatres that night!  The video is available on myspacetv.com, but get permission before leaving our site!

Hayden Conquers All

kewl_mag_hayden_panettiere_400_01June 9, 2008

While we already know Hayden Panettiere as a Hero from television and for animal and eco causes worldwide, we’re about to be treated to another kind of domination from the unbreakable cheerleader.  It has been announce that Hayden will be releasing the first single off of her upcoming album digitally on August 5th.  She’s already been the face of Candie’s clothing line, and now the single “Wake Up Call” will be incorporated into the advertising campaign featuring the starlet.  It’s the same kind of thing they did last year with Fergie and her songs “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and “Glamorous” – and we can only imagine that helped lead to the ultimate success of those songs, too!  We at KEWL have been waiting for this album to drop for over a year now, but as we all know, Hayden got a little too busy for a while there, and her music career had to wait a little while to get fit back into her schedule.  We’re just glad she made it in to record!

Ashley Phone Home

kewl_mag_ashley_tisdale_400June 9, 2008

The countdown is on!  Ashley Tisdale’s newest movie “Picture This” will be hitting ABC Family on July 13th.  The trailers are out, and her “Cheaper By the Dozen” hottie co-star Robbie Amell is on track to burn up the screen for all you girls out there!  The movie is about a ‘loser’ girl, the best guy in school, and the damage those nasty little cell phone cameras can actually do.  When life is good, it’s too messy to be photo ready!  If that lesson in reality isn’t fun to watch, I don’t know what is!  The movie will also be available to own on July 22nd, so start saving your allowance now!

Jess Goes Country

kewl_mag_jessica_simpson_400June 6, 2008

Last night, Jessica Simpson officially began her career as a country singer by appearing onstage at a CMA Music Festival concert in Nashville, Tennessee!  She means business with this new adventure, and is already set to perform her first country single on The View on June 25th.  After that, she’ll be performing with no less than Randy Travis as the Monterey County Fair in California on August 15th and 16th!  We’re eager to check her new single “Come On Over” and see what those pipes can do with country!

Nashville Now!

kewl_mag_taylor_swift_400June 6, 2008

And guess who else is taking part in the festivities this week in Nashville?  Taylor Swift gave and Up Close interview at the world famous Ryman Auditorium, and has pledged all the profits from sales at her swag booth on Saturday to the Nashville Area Red Cross Disaster Relief Fun.  Also out and about was Carrie Underwood as the lead off hitter for the Grand Ole Opry team for the City of Hope Celebrity Softball Challenge.  If you’re anywhere near Nashville, get out there and help your favorite celebrities help their favorite charities!

David A. Signs!

kewl_mag_david_archuleta_400June 5, 2008

Most of our reader’s favorite American Idol contender, David Archuleta, has now signed a recording deal with 19 Recordings/Jive.  The confusing name isn’t the amount of recordings he’ll do, but the actual name of the company!  As all the Idols will be on tour this summer and early fall, we probably won’t see an album release from David until late fall or Christmas.  Nice gift, right?  There is also talk that he might be bringing some songs to the table all by himself!  It’s great that this great singer is expanding his range by moving into the realm of songwriting, too.  Now he can make the songs that’ll break your hearts.  Betcha can’t wait!  Idols Live begins it’s hectic tour schedule on July 1st, so check online and in the newspaper for when they’ll be in your town!

I Smell Avril!

kewl_mag_avril_lavigne_400_01June 5, 2008

Well…not exactly!  The pop rock princess has signed a deal to bring out her very own fragrance, though, so soon you can smell the way she’d like to smell!  Everything’s just happened, so there’s no word on a name or even a direction the scent will take.  What do you think?  Is Avril more of a flowery girl?  Or do you think she’ll go with something spicy?  Guess we’ll just have to wait and smell.  She’s currently on tour in Europe, so if you live there, get out and check her show!

Jashley Promises

kewl_mag_jashlee_400June 4, 2008

Rumor has it that Ashley Tisdale and boyfriend Jared Murillo (of V Factory) have bought promise rings to celebrate their dating anniversary!  The cute couple was seen recently traveling back to Utah together where Ashley will be returning to the set of High School Musical 3.  Jared was in the first two movies, and assistant choreographed with Kenny Ortega on the second film, but has taken a break from the movies to commit more time to his new boy band V Factory.  Jared is originally from Utah, like many other HSM supporting cast members, and is probably just visiting home after a hectic one-month tour with his band.  We wish the couple much love and luck!

Hayden Nabs Another

kewl_mag_hayden_panettiere_400June 4, 2008

This time, red carpet fave Hayden Panettiere is in London accepting the Glamour Woman of the Year Award for Newcomer of the Year.  She was dressed to the nines as the youngest honoree of fabulous female fashionableness, alongside Lily Allen, Kate Moss, Leona Lewis, The Spice Girls and Kate Beckinsale.  We’re glad Hayden was singled out to stand toe-to-toe fashion-wise with these great ladies of style, though we think her poise and personal politics make her an even greater force to be reckoned with.  Congratulations, Hayden!

Will U Watch Planet Green?

June 3, 2008

The Discovery Channel launched a new channel last night called Planet Green, and the whole thing is devoted to ecologically minded entertainment.  Talented people as varied as Leonardo DiCaprio, Ludacris, Adrian Grenier, Emeril Lagasse, Tommy Lee, Tom Bergeron and Maria Menounous will be appearing or creating content for the new channel, all meant to help us live a more eco-friendly lifestyle.  The shows will all do this by providing entertainment instead of lectures, which sounds kewl.  From fashion to Hollywood gossip, to cooking, there’s always something new and green we can learn!

Is it Election Day in your state?  Presidential primaries are going on in New Mexico, Montana, South Dakota, Iowa, Alabama and New Jersey.  California  Is there an election going on in your state, county or city today?  Go online and find out, and if you’re not old enough to vote, make sure you nag and bug the 18 and overs in your life to get out there and use the right we all claim to be fighting for!  That would be a terrible thing to waste. is voting for state ballot measures and a host of state and local officials.

In a recent interview, Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump stated that the band is not so much taking a break, as focusing on “life stuff”.  We all know that his bandmate Pete Wentz recently got married to Ashlee Simpson (Ashlee Wentz?) and that the two are having a baby, but what kind of life are the others focusing on?  Stump said he’s in the middle of making a short film about the arts. “It pulls on a lot of my experiences as a musician, especially in this Perez Hilton blog culture, where there are so many more people who are more interested in the stuff you get out of arts -- the girls you can pick up at parties and the money you get, that type of stuff -- than they are about the actual arts."  The movie will be called “Moustachette”, which already sounds pretty funny to us!  We’re looking forward to all the ‘life stuff’ that these guys produce…but don’t mind it if they find their way back into the studio soon either!

MTV Can’t Be Stopped

Yesterday’s MTV Movie Awards that were held at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City were in danger of being cancelled as an early morning fire tore through the backlot of the famous Universal Studios.  Things that didn’t survive the fire were the well know New York Street sets, a video vault and the King Kong Exhibit that was used for the Universal Studios Tour.   The fire covered a two block area, but on a part of the backlot far away from the Amphitheatre so, as the old saying would have it, The Show Must Go On!  In one of the craziest awards shows to date, awards were given out to stars and presenters alike, who knew how to have the most fun possible, making fun of themselves and others all night long.  A good sense of humor is required, along with some nice party clothes.  Nominees and winners are as follows: (winners are starred!)
