Sadie Hawkins Day!

istock_000004883891xsmallFeb. 29, 2008

Today is a very rare day!  February 29th only comes around once every four years.  If this is your birthday, you will stay young forever!  That’s because, when other people are celebrating their 48th birthdays, you’ll only be celebrating your 12th birthday! (Times tables, people!)  The reason for this strange extra day, is because our calendar, our whole system of keeping time, though it’s pretty good, it ain’t perfect!  We need to add in the day to keep our spring from slowly slipping into summer, and the whole year right along with it!  And there’s a little added value to this day, too: Did you know that on this day, women are allowed to ask their beaus to marry them, and they have to say yes?!?  Though it’s an old fashioned custom that girls aren’t allowed to ask, we’d caution against taking advantage of this day!  Make him do the proposing!  Then at least you know he means it!  Happy Sadie Hawkins Day!

Ashlee and Pete Promise

showimg1_400_190Feb. 28, 2008

Promise rings are the thing of the moment!  Ashlee yesterday told reporters that she and Pete are not engaged, but the ring he gave her is a promise ring.  The difference?!?  “… he hasn’t asked my dad yet…”  This is one young couple that has weathered all sorts of rumors and bad talk, and made it!  Congrats to them!  Also in on the movement are the Jonas Brothers!  No!  They’re not promised to Ashlee Simpson, too!  But they are wearing rings as a promise to themselves.  Namely, that they’re saving themselves for marriage.  It’s a promise of purity, and seems to be all the rage these days.  To each his own Promise!  We’re just not sure if that makes them safer from the hordes of girls or not!  Good luck, guys!

Idol Bugged By Flu

showimg1_400_191Feb. 28, 2008

We don’t know about the rest of the country, but there’s an evil flu bug traveling around in LA, and simply everyone is being hit by it!  And that includes the American Idol contestants!  The only thing you can do to protect yourself is to hole up away from all human contact, and that is not exactly on the schedule for the contestants.  As a matter of fact, they’re so busy, enough sleep to stay healthy might be getting to be a problem!  We know how bad the flu is, and our hearts go out to them!  Be sure to go to our AI blog in the kewlblogs section, and give us your faves!  We can be persuaded by a good solid argument!  Who’s going home tonight?  Give us your predictions on the blog!

A Sandler Movie to Love!

showimg1_400_188Feb. 27, 2008

Adam Sandler is working on a movie called “Bedtime Stories”, in which the stories he makes up and tells his young son each evening begin to come true!  So far we’ve had sneak peaks of him standing in a brightly colored gumball downpour, and can’t wait to see what other fantastical scenes he comes up with for his son.  Also, another fave, Kerri Russell, will be his love interest!  How can we not like it now?!?  Can’t wait!  Even though we’ll have to!  The movie is scheduled to come out on Christmas Day 2008!

Miley’s Everywhere!

showimg1_400_189Feb. 27, 2008

Not only was she at the Oscars this year, and even got to introduce a song, but she was also featured on the legendary Post-Oscars Barbara Walters Special!  And it keeps going!  Along with a new video show on YouTube (The Miley and Mandy Show with her BFF), she’s also just agreed to hosting duties for the Country Music Channel Country Music Awards with her daddy Billy Ray!  Pretty soon we’ll have Miley for president!  At this point, she’d probably win!  Keep up the good work, Miley!

Ear Muff Time!

showimg1_400_186Feb. 26, 2008

Just Kidding!  But according to Fall Out Boy’s bassist Pete Wentz, the band never quite realized how much they swear until watching footage for their upcoming live CD/DVD!  And that’s why they’ve decided to call it “****”!  In the final cut, everything’s pretty much been edited out or bleeped, but you get the picture!  Maybe this bit of self-realization will help the boys to watch their language in future?!?  We can only hope!  The set will include lots of their hits, plus kewl covers of songs by everyone from Akon to Michael Jackson!  The set is due out April 8th, and as for what to call it, Pete says, “any little four letter work will work.”  We vote for LOVE!

April Will Be Busy!

showimg1_400_187Feb. 26, 2008

And on the other side of the music business, Ashlee Simpson will be releasing her new album “Bittersweet World” on April 15th!  She’s been out promoting her new single “Little Miss Obsessive” and will be filming the video for it once she’s finished her current tour.  April should be a happy time for the cute and ueber-musical couple!  Good luck guys!

Oscar Gold!

oscar1_400_01Feb. 25, 2008

Some real surprises at the Oscars last night!  The best song award went to the singing-songwriting duo from the Irish indie film “Once”, which was a testament to how good a really small simple film about music can be!  No production numbers here!  Just two handicams and a lot of love for the music!  Other surprises were Marion Cotillard for her performance as the legendary French singer Edith Piaf, and Tilda Swinton for her role in “Michael Clayton”.  The films that took the most awards were “No Country For Old Men” and “There Will Be Blood”, so basically, we all have to wait a couple of years to be old enough to enjoy these films!  “Juno” got a nod for best original screenplay, and its writer, Diablo Cody, was so overwhelmed it was just amazingly cute!  Following is a full list of the nights winners:

Happy Birthday, Dakota!

February 23rd

dakota_fanning_l_400_01

Happy 14th Birthday, Dakota!  This young star who can put her older co-workers to shame with her incredible acting talent is back in action for us at the movies!  Last year, she completed only two films for us to enjoy, but now there's no stopping her!  For 2008 and 2009 she's already finished filming "Winged Creatures", "Push" and doing the voice of Coraline for the slightly gothic animated feature of the same name.  She's currently hard at work on "The Secret Life of Bees", and will start on "My Sister's Keeper" right after that!  When will this girl find time to finish High School?!?  Whatever she does, we all know we'll be watching!  Once again, Happy Birthday, Dakota!

Idol Cuts Begin!

showimg1_400_184Feb. 22, 2008

The first cuts are the deepest!  And don’t they know it!  The first kids to get cut from Season 7 of American Idol were made last night.  Even though it’s tough on them, the cuts did seem to be universally acceptable based on their performances – so no surprises or ‘Sanjayas’ in the bunch to distract and keep people voting for non-musical reasons.  So we say a sad goodbye to Amy, Joanne, Colton and Garrett, and get ready for the next challenge with the final 20 contestants!  Do you have a favorite already?  Chime in on kewlblogs!

Happy Birthday, Corbin!

February 21st

corbin_bleu_l_400

Are you happy yet?  You soon will be happy that hottie Corbin is turning just one tiny year older!  He's got so much coming our way this year!  The HSM star just finished up filming "Free Style", a new movie in which he plays an aspiring moto-cross rider!  Isn't it kewl the things stars get to learn, and all in the name of 'work'?  And of course, there's the next installment of the HSM movies "HSM3: Senior Year"!  The kewlest thing about that is that we finally get to see him and all his co-stars together on the BIG SCREEN!  If you need a little Bleu-a-thon to get you through until then, check out Galaxy Quest and Mystery Men to get early glimpses of the man, or even DVDs of Flight 29 Down or Jump In!  Corbin is turning 19 today, so with your birthday wishes for him, remind him to register to vote!  The election is coming soon!

Happy Birthday, Corbin!

Happy Birthday, Jennifer!

February 21st

jennifer_love_hewitt_l_400

Seems like our favorite "Love" to love is busy being happily loved by her husband these days!  She took a break after her second "Garfield" movie, and is now back at it, voicing a princess for the animated action adventure "Delgo" and developing another project of her own that may be a little more "grown-up" than we're used to from the "Pary of Five" "Ghost Whisperer" gal.  She may no longer be "Hollywood Tiny", but she's still looks great!  Have a Happy Day, Jennifer!

Beyonce Plays Chess

showimg1_400_183Feb. 20, 2008

We knew she was a hot Connect 4 player, but now Chess?  Well, yes!  But different!  She’ll be starring in an upcoming film about the legendary Chicago record label Chess Records.  Even though she’ll be playing the real life person and jazz legend Etta James in the film, the movie is slated to be titled Cadillac Records – maybe because of the way Cadillacs became the symbol of rising fortunes in the 1950’s, when the movie is set.  Other stars will include Adrien Brody, Jeffrey Wright, Cedric the Entertainer, Columbus Short, Emmanuelle Chriqui and Tammy Blanchard.  We’ll be looking for the four songs by Beyonce on the soundtrack, though!  Checkmate!

Is will.i.am a Mutant?!?

showimg2_400_25Feb. 20, 2008

He soon will be!  He’s accepted the role of Wraith in the upcoming X-Men prequel “Wolverine” opposite Hugh Jackman!  His mutant power is the ability to become translucent, and even though we might have trouble seeing him from time to time, we’re pretty sure we won’t forget his motion picture debut!  The rest of the cast is filling out nicely, considering they’ve already finished filming parts of the film in New Zealand, and have moved the production to Australia.  They’ll even be filming scenes in New Orleans…hey!  If they filmed in New South Wales it’d be an all “New” production!!!  There are all sorts of great new mutants to get excited about in this one, but it’d be best to keep your patience cap on: the film doesn’t open until May of ’09!  How will we stand it?!?

Happy Birthday, Haylie!

February 19th

haylie_duff_l_400

Been wondering what Haylie's up to?  Well she's a busy, busy bee!!!  She's got four projects in the works for 2008, and for one of them, she's co-producer!!!  You go girl!  Look out for her in "Foodfight", "Doesn't Texas Ever End", and "Super Capers", and maybe we'll take a miss on "The I Scream Man"... the title is even scary!

She's been busy since Napoleon Dynamite, too, as Sandy Jameson on 7th Heaven and perforing songs for soundtracks like Hilary's "A Cinderella Story" and both girl's movie "Material Girls".  Wish Haylie a Happy Day!

Happy Birthday, Victoria!

And a Happy, shiny Lola to you, too!  This girl has been back at work on the set of Nickelodeon's Zoey 101 along with all of her kewl castmates!  For 2008, she's got tons of new episodes up her sleeves for you guys, plus a new movie!  She'll be co-starring in The Kings of Appletown with twin heartthrobs Dylan and Cole Sprouse!  It's in production right now, but you'll have to be patient until Christmastime to see it!  We think you'll make it!  Happy 15th Birthday, Victoria!

Happy Birthday Arielle

February 19th

arielle_kebbel_l_400

Happy Birthday, Arielle!  And we don't mean the mermaid!  Talk about keeping busy for you in 2008!  This graduate of Aquamarine, John Tucker Must Die and The Grudge 2 has 3 movies coming out this year!  Look for her as Emily in Forever Strong, Chloe in Brooklyn to Manhattan, and Alex in A Tale of Two Sisters with Emily Browning from Lemony Snickets A Series of Unfortunate Events!  That one's already our favorite! Here's to seeing more of Arielle in the future!  Have a Happy, Arielle!

February 18th

rihanna_l_400

Happy Birthday, Rihanna!  This internationally famous talented and beautiful singer has been making us happy for the past year... isn't it time she had a Happy day, too?!?  We're pretty sure she's enjoying herself... at least a little!  Great music, good times, and great rumors of hot boys in her life!  What more could a girl want?!?  We can't wait to see, and hear, what she has in store for us next!  Keep up the good work, and enjoy your day, girl!!!  Happy Day!!!

Happy Birthday, Jason!

February 17th

jason_ritter_l_400

Happy Birthday, Jason!  This is one guy who's been hard at work to get lots of movies out to you this coming year - one of them, he even produced himself!!!  Last year, he finished "The Education of Charlie Banks", "The Deal", and "Peter and Vandy", and is in talk to star in "A Handful of Beans" about a young guy who comes home to the desert to rebuild an old bi-plane.  Sounds kewl to us!  If you didn't catch him on The Class as Ethan Haas, you may have some catching up to do!  Here's to seeing more and more of him in our future!  Happy Birthday, Jason!

Happy Birthday, Billie Joe!

February 17th

billie_joe_armstrong_l

Happy Birthday, Billie Joe!  This rocker has been hard at work this past year promoting Instant Karma: The Campaign to Save Darfur.  It was a kewl set with great songs from all the top rock and pop acts in the business, and if you didn't get it then, getting it now will still benefit Darfur!  He and the band have some hilarious perks for joining their fan club... which they lovingly call "The Idiot Club"!  Since Green Day's next album is slated to come out sometime this year, let's wish him all the inspiration he needs to turn us out another good one!  Have a great year, Billie Joe!

Aerosmith Hero?!?

showimg1_400_181Feb. 15, 2008

If you’re a fan of the band Aerosmith, you’ll be happy to learn that they are starring in a new version of the “Guitar Hero” home video game!  And if you’re not a fan yet, you will be once you’ve sunk your skills into this game!  Yeah, they’re rockers, but they wrote and performed some of the greatest classic ballads of the 80’s and 90’s!  Impress your parents!  Heck, you might even have a tough time getting them to stop playing your game!  To make the game more real, they even got the real lead singer, Steven Tyler (Liv’s dad!) and lead guitarist Joe Perry to go in studio and do their onstage moves in a ‘motion capture’ process, that lets computer animators combine live action moves with animated people.  It makes you go “Crazy”!

Denzel Sweeps Image Awards!

showimg2_400_24 Feb. 15, 2008

At last night’s NAACP Image Awards, the most awards went to Denzel Washington for his work on “The Great Debaters”.  Seems appropriate, as it is a story of believing in the equality of intelligent minds, no matter what color skin they may be housed in!  Awards were given out in four main categories: Motion Pictures, Television, Music, and Literature (Books).  In Music, classic standbys like Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock were honored, as well as newcomer Jordin Sparks, and four separate awards to Alicia Keyes for her contributions this year.  For a full list of winners, go to www.naacpimageawards.net.

Vegan Shoes?

natalie_purple_400Feb. 13, 2008

We weren’t really planning on eating them!  But seriously!  At least Natalie Portman is doing something to expand the range of products fellow vegans can buy without guilt!  Shoes have always been a problem, as non-leather choices are often made of plastic, and along with being tacky, make your feet sweat like crazy!  Natalie is releasing a new line of shoes that do not have any animal products whatsoever in them, plus 5% of all profits from the shoes will be going to charity!  That’s putting your money where your mouth is… in so many ways!!!  The shoes are available online at TeCasan.com, if you want to check them out!  And it looks like she’ll be able to wear them on the red carpet as well!

Jack Johnson Jumps!

showimg1_400_180Feb. 13, 2008

The laid back Hawaiian singer songwriter has done it again!  His latest album, Sleep Through the Static, is number one on the Billboard 200 Chart.  375,000 copies were sold, 139,000 of which were digital, which is a record in itself!  This multi-talented guy started out as a pro-surfer, went to film school at University of California at Santa Barbara, and while making a surf documentary, wrote and played the music to accompany the film!  His tunes got noticed in the music industry, and he even got to team up with his music idol, Ben Harper!  Sleep is his second number one album – the soundtrack to the film Curious George was his first.  Do you like Jack Johnson’s music?!?  Sound off on our blog!

Fools Top Box Office

showimg1_400_178Feb. 12, 2008

Who’d a thunk it?!?  Fool’s Gold, which was rumored to be an only so-so romantic comedy took box office gold this weekend!  In the top spot and beating out Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins and the Hannah Montana 3-D movie, it took everyone by surprise making 21.6 million dollars!  Not huge (!), but definitely huge for a romantic comedy!  That may be why not many good ones are made these days!  They don’t seem to bring in the bucks that something more violent, bloody, or stupidly comic usually will.  What do you think about that?  Sound off on the KEWLmag blog!!!

Who Won a Grammy?

showimg1_400_176Feb. 11, 2008

Better to ask: who won FIVE!!!  While she’s hopefully getting her life back on track in the UK, soul singer Amy Winehouse took home 5 Grammy’s last night for songs on her album Back In Black!  That’s the most of any other artist this year!  Kanye West took home four, Bruce Springsteen and the Clark Sisters each took three, and Carrie Underwood and Justin Timberlake each got two awards.  None of these people got album of the year!  In the biggest upset of the night, veteran jazz musician Herbie Hancock took the award for Album of the Year for his disc of covers of Joni Mitchell songs called “River: The Joni Letters”.  Two great artists who have influenced a LOT of people – you might want to check them out!  For a full list of winners, check out Grammy.com, and we hope all these wins will encourage Miss Winehouse in her attempts to fight her addictions!  Congratulations to all the winners!

It's Emma's Day!  And she's got plenty to be excited about!  She's got a new movie coming out this summer called "Wild Child", in which she plays a rish American girl who is shipped off to an English boarding school.  Think "Harry Potter", but without all the magic!  Tragic!  And heating the cool English air will be Alex Pettyfer (Stormbreaker)!

Other than that, she's set to finish 3 more films already before the end of 2009!  And maybe there'll be mor Unfabulous in her future?!?  Hey!  Anything is possible with enough fan letters!  Have a Happy Day, Emma!

Happy Birthday, Rachel!

February 9th

rachel_melvin_l_400

Have a Happy DOOL, Rachel!  Though this talented girl knows how to keep busy - soap operas shoot five days a week, and NEVER END! - she might be able to enjoy some birthday time off this year because of the writer's strike!  There can be a positive side to everything, can't there?  Rachel has a movie coming out this year in which she plays sorority sisters with Haylie Duff!  That must have been a fun time at the sorority house!  Let's wish Rachel music, dancing and fun projects to work on in her new year!  Enjoy your day, girl!

Grammy’s Heating Up!

showimg1_400_175Feb. 8, 2008

As the only awards show of the season that stars are allowed to attend so far, the Grammys are turning into the hottest ticket for celebrities who want to get out into the spotlight again!  Not only has living leggy legend Tina Turner added her name to the list of performers (she’ll sing a duet with Beyonce!), but so have Kid Rock, classical pianist Eldar, jazz saxophonist Dave Koz, and Jazz singer Keely Smith.  Presenters added to the line-up are Akon, Tony Bennett, Cher, Nelly Furtado, Quincy Jones, Prince, Ringo Starr, Dave Stewart, Taylor Swift and Stevie Wonders as well as non-musicians Tom Hanks and Jason Bateman.  The show will air on CBS on Sunday, and with this line up, be prepared for a looooooong show!

Do you Phineas?

showimg2_400_23Feb. 7, 2008

Or Ferb?  Why not both?  The newest animated series on the Disney Channel is filled with familiar teen star voices – if not directly their faces!  The star of the show, Vincent Martella (also of TVs “Everybody Hates Chris”), is proud that the show even makes his father laugh.  His sister is played by Ashley Tisdale of HSM, Mom is played by Caroline Rhea from “Sabrina the Teenage Witch”, and his girlfriend/love interest by our own KEWL Dance Coach Alyson Stoner of “Cheaper by the Dozen”!  Even Mitchel Musso of Hannah Montana is in this thing!  All that talent packed in to one show has got to make it great!  If you want to catch it, it’s on every night in February at 8pm on the Disney Channel!  Check it!

Okay, so most of you can’t vote, but did your parents, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, grandparent, neighbors, teachers (we could go on, but so can you) VOTE?  Ask them!!!  It doesn’t matter to us who they want to vote for, but they should take advantage of the rights our democracy allows us!  Not only is there a presidential primary race to decide, but there are probably a few local and state decisions to be made as well!  The election is only in 24 states, and for five of them only for one party, so we’ll give you a list so you don’t go bugging people if you’re in the wrong state!  Ha!

Green Apple Expands

Feb. 5, 2008

The Earth Day festival that started last year in 3 cities is expanding!  This year, the free concert/festivals will be held in New York City, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Miami, Denver, Dallas, San Francisco and Los Angeles.  The festival is intended to raise awareness about green technologies and practices that can help you put less strain on our planets resources in your everyday life, as well as greener practices for businesses big and small!  Last year’s event was the largest ‘carbon-neutral’ event ever, meaning that they planted trees or supported green technology to equal any emissions they caused!  Pretty kewl, huh?  Look for more information on participating bands and artists as April nears – and get ready for an earth friendly day in the park for free!

Miley Rules the Boxoffice!

showimg1_400_171Feb. 4, 2008

You guys did it!  Number one at the box office this past weekend was the Hannah Montana/ Miley Cyrus Best of Both Worlds Concert tour film in 3-D!  The KEWL staff was out at the El Capitan in Hollywood (Disney’s Home Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard!) living the experience!  It was a crazy time, and the behind the scenes looks at rehearsals, costume changes and family life were kewl bonuses to the incredible show Miley was putting on!  And did we mention the Jonas Brothers?!?  ‘Nuff said!  The entire theatre went supersonic with screams every time the brothers came on the screen!  It looks like some theatres may be extending their run of the movie for another week based on the popularity, so if you weren’t able to get tickets yet, get checkin’!

Groundhog Day

gopher_400

Feb 3, 2008

Being yanked out of his bed by a bunch of top-hat and tuxedo wearing men,  is just part of the job for PUNXSUTAWNEY PHIL. Alas, this picture is not of the famous groundhog, but just a picture of a random groundhog. However, in PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pennsylvania, a groundhog, that looked a lot like this one, did get pulled out of his hole where thousands of people sat waiting to find out if he could see his shadow. Well, bad news, he did see his shadow, which means there will be 6 more weeks of winter. Just when you thought it was almost over! But anyone who knows anything knows that winter ends when spring begins and that's not until March 21st.

The tradition is that if a hibernating animal sees a shadow on Feb 2, which is the Christian holdiay of Candlemas, then winter will last for another 6 weeks. However, if no shadow is seen, legend says that spring will come early.

However, in Lilburn Georgia, where Phil's couterpart Beau was peacefully napping, he too got pulled out to see if he could see his shadow. Not as many people showed up for him and no men in hats and suits woke him either, but the good news is that Beau did not see his own shadow. We'll just have to wait to see who is better at this whole prediction thing!

Happy Birthday, Shakira!

February 2nd

shakira_l_400

Feliz Compleano, Shakira!  Or should we say, in the Latin tradition: Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll?!?  This Columbian songstress, and 'happening' in her own right wasn't kidding when she said her "Hips Don't Lie"!  All that bellydancing is in her blood!  Her dad is Lebanese, and that's bellydancing territory going way back!  Some kewl quotes from the lady herself:

I'm lucky to have family around me. Otherwise, I'll be taking the risk of falling in love with myself. But there are always people close to me who I trust, who will scold me and pull my ears if I need it. Fame isolates people from reality. That happens to many artists, and I don't want it to happen to me.

And: The leaders are lacking love, and love is lacking leaders.

Wise words!  For her birthday, let's be those leaders!  Have a Happy Day, Shakira!

Happy Birthday, Lauren!

lauren_conrad_l_400Feb 1, 2008

Wish LC a Happy Day! But, PLEASE! Call her Lauren!  She's the character we really care about that went from Laguna Beach to The Hills. And why not? She looks great in everything the designers put on her, doesn't make too much of a fool of herself, even though cameras have followed her for the past few years straight, and even managed to stay on the good side of a bad boyfriend stealing story line! All that, and she's begun to design a line of clothes! We guess that's not so surprising - after all, she is studying fashion design at FIDM in Los Angeles! Have a Happy One, Lauren!

Last Week for Montana!

dsc_10382_400

Feb. 1, 2008

Hannah Montana, that is!  This is it guys!  Miley Cyrus finished her live concert tour last night, with something like 70 shows under her belt after the added dates!   Tonight, however, begins the last chance to see the show.  How can that be?  Early on in the tour, they started filming in Disney digital 3-D, and now the concert is available in theatres across America for ONE WEEK ONLY!  The entire staff of KEWL will be among the first fans to see the spectacular movie version of the concert today, and we’re feeling pretty lucky!  If you haven’t got your plans to go set yet, do it now!  Tickets are selling out fast, and when it’s over, it’s over!  …though we suspect there will be a DVD available in the near future…!  We’ll keep you informed!
